At least 40 people have lost their lives trying to cross the border illegally. Most of such cases occurred on rivers.

This was announced by the spokesman of the State Border Service of Ukraine, Andriii Demchenko.

«Actually, people were drowning without assessing their strength. Some rivers are quite treacherous, having tree roots that a person can't see where they can drag them. «More than once, border guards saved the lives of people who had been walking in the mountains for days, but were actually quite exhausted because of taking such reckless steps,» said Demchenko.

According to him, since August, there has been a significant trend towards a decrease in the number of attempts to cross the border illegally.

«Most of the attempts take place outside the checkpoints, that is, on the green part of the border. As before, the most active areas remain the border with Romania and Moldova. Fewer cases are recorded on the border with Hungary, Slovakia and Poland,» the spokesman informed.

NikVesti reported that border guards detained a group of men who tried to cross the Tisza by boat and get to Hungary.
