More than 100 thousand hectares of crops lost due to drought and frost in Mykolaiv region

In the Mykolaiv region, farmers lost a significant portion of their crops due to spring frosts and prolonged summer drought. Sunflower and corn suffered the most, with yields in some fields decreasing several times compared to previous years.

This was stated by Volodymyr Afanasiev, a specialist in the Department of Agricultural Development of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, during a briefing, according to NikVesti.

According to him, 1.3 million hectares of crops were sown for the 2025 harvest in the region, of which approximately 100,000 hectares were lost, and another 350,000 hectares were severely damaged.

«These areas yielded minimal harvests. These are mainly late crops, such as corn and sunflower,» said Afanasiev.

He cited an example that the average yield per hectare was eight centners of sunflower and seven centners of corn, while in favourable years these figures were several times higher.

«For comparison, in previous years, under favourable weather conditions, the yield of these crops was higher: sunflower — about 20 centners, and corn for grain — 50 centners per hectare,» the official said.

In total, in 2025, the region produced two million tonnes of grain, which is 170 thousand tonnes less than last year. Sunflower production decreased by half a million tonnes to about 250,000 tonnes, while the harvest of vegetables and potatoes remained stable at 500,000 and 150,000 tonnes, respectively.

He noted that this year's crop production index in the region is 84.1% of the previous year's level.

Earlier, Vitalii Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, said that due to the war, drought and lack of funding, this year was more difficult for farmers in the region than in 2023.
