In Mykolaiv, there are currently no plans to plant new trees on Soborna Street to replace the dangerous and dead trees that have been removed.
This was reported by the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks in response to a request from NikVesti.
The company had previously carried out work to remove trees along Soborna Street. The green spaces were previously inspected by a special commission and approved for removal. According to the inspection report, eight plane trees, one cherry tree and one poplar tree were to be removed from the section between Tsentralnyi Avenue and Vadym Blahovisnyi Street. The commission concluded that all these trees were in poor condition and posed a hazard.
At the same time, the issue of restoring green spaces is not currently being considered.
«Regarding the removal of dangerous and dry trees on Soborna Street and the planting of new ones, the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks reports that the budget for 2026 does not provide for the planting of new trees on Soborna Street,» the enterprise said in its response.
Controversial tree pruning on Soborna Street in Mykolaiv
As is known, for the third day in a row, the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks has been pruning plane trees in the centre of Mykolaiv. Municipal workers assured that the trees would not lose their decorative quality. However, because of this, representatives of the environmental inspection called the police to draw up a report. The director of the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks, Dmytro Chuchmai, stated that the pruning of trees between Spaska and Velyka Morska streets is part of planned work being carried out in accordance with the approved schedule and the decision of the executive committee. On 7 January, the public and the environmental inspectorate managed to suspend the work of the municipal workers.
But on the morning of 8 January, the municipal enterprise resumed tree pruning. Police officers were called to the scene. Later, the director of the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks arrived. In conversation, he noted that the police cannot ensure the work of municipal workers and are hindering them. In addition, Chuchmai explained that the trees on Soborna Street are being cut down at the request of local residents.
However, Mykolaiv environmentalists have a radically different point of view on this situation. For example, environmentalist Diana Krysinska says that this is a gross violation of environmental standards. She claims that the municipal enterprise is pruning healthy branches of plane trees that are more than 30 years old without permission.
On 9 January, under the post NikVesti on social media, former Mykolaiv Deputy Mayor Tamila Buhaienko wrote that she tried to convince the employees of Mykolaiv Parks to stop cutting down plane trees on Soborna Street, saying that it was a mockery of the trees.
Also today, 9 January, representatives of the Mykolaiv City Council and the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks ignored the environmental commission of the Mykolaiv Regional Council, which convened to discuss the scandalous pruning of plane trees on Soborna Street. The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, as well as the head of the Department of Housing and Communal Services, Dmytro Bezdolnyi, and the director of the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks, Dmytro Chuchmai, were invited to the commission. However, no representatives of the city authorities were present at the commission.
