The municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks carried out work to remove plane trees along the city's main pedestrian street, Soborna Street. All trees were inspected and approved by a special commission.

This was reported on the municipal enterprise's Facebook page.

According to the green space inspection report №31 dated 20 January 2026, eight plane trees, cherry trees and poplars are planned to be removed from the section between Tsentralnyi Avenue and Vadym Blahovisnyi Street. The commission concluded that all of them are in poor condition.

In a comment to NikVesti, Nataliia Barchuk, a state inspector for environmental protection in the South-Western District, who is a member of the tree inspection commission, confirmed that the plane trees were indeed dry.

«They were dry and withering. We inspected these plane trees as a commission back in the spring. Our representatives were there, including Inna Tymchenko (associate professor of the Department of Horticulture and Ecology at Taras Shevchenko National University of Luhansk, Inna Tymchenko, — note) and Diana Krysinska (Mykolaiv ecologist and social activist Diana Krysinska, — note). We inspected all the plane trees on Soborna Street. We noted the condition of each plane tree. We marked them. Based on this data, we removed the plane trees,» says Nataliia Barchuk.

She also added that the trees that had been cut down in previous years by the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks were not removed, as the case is still being considered in court. According to Nataliia Barchuk, the trees that were cut down are still in good condition.

«Criminal cases are still open. Nothing has been lost from those plane trees. One has a small drying top. Otherwise, these plane trees are still standing. These plane trees cannot be removed because the criminal case is still open,» she added.

Controversial tree pruning on Soborna Street in Mykolaiv

As is known, for the third day in a row, the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks has been pruning plane trees in the centre of Mykolaiv. Municipal workers assured that the trees would not lose their decorative quality. However, because of this, representatives of the environmental inspection called the police to draw up a report. The director of the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks, Dmytro Chuchmai, stated that the pruning of trees between Spaska and Velyka Morska streets is part of planned work being carried out in accordance with the approved schedule and the decision of the executive committee. On 7 January, the public and the environmental inspectorate managed to suspend the work of the municipal workers.

But on the morning of 8 January, the municipal enterprise resumed tree pruning. Police officers were called to the scene. Later, the director of the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks arrived. In conversation, he noted that the police cannot ensure the work of municipal workers and are hindering them. In addition, Chuchmai explained that the trees on Soborna Street are being cut down at the request of local residents.

However, Mykolaiv environmentalists have a radically different point of view on this situation. For example, environmentalist Diana Krysinska says that this is a gross violation of environmental standards. She claims that the municipal enterprise is pruning healthy branches of plane trees that are more than 30 years old without permission.

On 9 January, under the post NikVesti on social media, former Mykolaiv Deputy Mayor Tamila Buhaienko wrote that she tried to convince the employees of Mykolaiv Parks to stop cutting down plane trees on Soborna Street, saying that it was a mockery of the trees.

Also today, 9 January, representatives of the Mykolaiv City Council and the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks ignored the environmental commission of the Mykolaiv Regional Council, which convened to discuss the scandalous pruning of plane trees on Soborna Street. The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, as well as the head of the Department of Housing and Communal Services, Dmytro Bezdolnyi, and the director of the municipal enterprise Mykolaiv Parks, Dmytro Chuchmai, were invited to the commission. However, no representatives of the city authorities were present at the commission.
