The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, has summed up ten years of his work as mayor. In a post published on social media, he named his key achievements and stated that he intends to continue working.
The text of his address to Mykolaiv residents was published on the mayor's telegram channel.
«Facebook reminded me that at the end of November, ten years have passed since I became the mayor of Mykolaiv. Ten years that have included changes, plans, and moments that have turned the usual life upside down,» wrote Oleksandr Sienkevych.
The mayor mentioned the launch of trolleybuses to remote areas of the city, the launch of a dunker to the Varvarivka neighbourhood, the renovation of medical facilities, schools and kindergartens, as well as the development of lighting, cycling infrastructure and the renewal of municipal equipment. He added that many of the plans had to be put on hold due to the war.
«After 24 February, our priorities changed dramatically. We dealt with water, electricity, security and humanitarian aid. The city is holding on thanks to people who work and volunteer under fire, support the Armed Forces, and develop business when it seemed impossible. It is thanks to those who stand by the families of prisoners and come out every Sunday to say: we are waiting for each and every one of you. Supporting the army for the community of Mykolaiv has been, is and remains our top priority. We support the military with vehicles, equipment and thousands of drones. And we will continue to do so. We help when it's hard, when resources are limited, because there is no other way,» he stressed.
Oleksandr Sienkevych called the journey of 10 years a difficult one, but added that Mykolaiv has the support of international partners, and the mayor himself plans to continue to promote the city's interests at all levels.
«On business trips, I always talk about our Mykolaiv residents and how we are rebuilding. People hear us and are ready to help. There are many more things I would like to talk about, and when the security situation allows, we will show the city and our partners what we have been working on all these years. We will definitely return to the projects that were suspended by the war. Was it easy? No, it wasn't. Will it be easy in the future? I don't think so. But we have a team, we have partners, we have citizens who do not stop. We will definitely do everything. Together,» the mayor wrote.
Oleksandr Sienkevych first became the mayor of Mykolaiv on 24 November 2015, when he ran as a candidate of the «Samopomich» party. He beat the then incumbent mayor, Yurii Hranaturov, and went on to the second round against the candidate of the «Opposition Bloc», Ihor Diatlov. He won the second round with 54.9% of the vote.
In November 2020, he was re-elected mayor of Mykolaiv, defeating in the second round the candidate from «OPFL» Vladyslav Chaika.
