There will be no large-scale modernisation of parks and squares in Mykolaiv during the war. The municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks» only plans to water green spaces, mow the grass and clean the territory.

This was announced by Dmytro Chuchmai, director of the utility «Mykolaiv Parks», during a live broadcast on 30 September, NikVesti reports.

According to him, the company will now focus only on maintaining the territories in proper sanitary condition.

«What do I personally see in the parks? Well-kept green areas, modern lighting and modern children's and sports grounds. Unfortunately, while the war is on, we are not planning any global modernisation. For now, everything will remain at the level of maintaining proper sanitary conditions», said the director of the utility company.

He also commented on the situation with Victory Park. According to him, the volleyball court, benches, litter bins have already been restored, and the coastal area has been cleaned. But there are no plans for any modernisation in the park.

«I have a desire to do something in Peremohy Park, but it's a lot of money. The company's specialists are not doing a very good job. As you saw, the Alpine slide appeared there last year. We planted trees there. We are tidying up the area and mowing the grass. We have put in order the volleyball court, the coastal area, repaired the bins, benches, and cleaned the sand. In other words, we do work that does not require huge investments. There is no point in investing (funds, — note) while there is a war going on,» said Dmytro Chuchmai.

As a reminder, employees of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks» have again scolded citizens about vandalism — this time in the «Heart of the City» (Manhanariivskyi) park. Unidentified persons damaged a juniper bush and broke plant supports.

Before that, employees of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks» expressed outrage over another theft of lavender bushes in the park at the intersection of Kolodiazna and 3rd Slobidska streets.

We would also like to remind you that despite the record heat wave and massive loss of greenery in Mykolaiv, the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks» continues to install information signs in public gardens. This time, they were placed in the «Vitovskyi» park and the Danylo Samoilovych park.

How Mykolaiv is losing its greenery

Earlier it was reported that in Mykolaiv, on Tsentralnyi Avenue near the Arkasivskyi (Pushkinskyi) ring, a  «hedge» made of privet has dried up. These bushes were purchased in 2024 by the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks» for 110 hryvnias per unit as part of a large purchase of greenery totalling 3.5 million hryvnias.

Mykolaiv environmentalist and civic activist Diana Krysinska was outraged that trees in the city were watered during the hottest time of the day. She called on employees of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks» to change the watering schedule. However, the company said that they only watered trees in the early morning and evening.

In the group of the Contact Centre at Mykolaiv City Council, local resident Inna Tymchenko drew attention to the critical condition of the trees in Admiralteiskyi Park. According to her, young saplings there have completely dried up without watering.

As a reminder, all 100 young pine trees planted in October 2023 in Mykolaiv's «Peremohy Park» have dried up.

In July, it was reported that in Mykolaiv, employees of the municipal enterprise «Parks» were mowing the grass in the midst of a heatwave. Environmentalists said that the exposed soil was causing trees to lose their ability to receive nutrients.

According to forecasts, the climate in Ukraine is changing so rapidly that by the middle of the century, summer will last up to six months, and average daily temperatures in the south, particularly in Mykolaiv region, will reach 30°C.
