An inventory of trees and shrubs in public gardens and parks has been launched in Mykolaiv. So far, specialists from «Mykolaiv Parks» have inspected 10 green areas.

This was reported by the utility company in response to an information request from NikVesti.

The work on counting green spaces began in April 2024. The «Mykolaiv parks» states that they will do this only between April and October.

So far, they have inspected and compiled planting diaries for 10 green areas in the city, namely:

  • Arkasivskyi Square on Arkasivska Street, corner of Admiralska Street — area 13233 (trees — 201, bushes — 20, hedges — 165.8 linear metres)
  • Mykhailo Aleksandrov Square along Tsentralnyi Avenue, corner of Buznyk Street — area 4113 (trees — 155, bushes — 1116)
  • Square «Northern Family» on Architect Starova Street — area 1264 (bushes — 22)
  • Square «Youth» on Architect Starova Street — area 3415 (trees — 59)
  • Square of Memory on Sylikatna Street — area 3415 (trees — 59)
  • Avtomobilist Square on Heroiv Ukrainy Avenue — area 2287 (trees — 29, bushes — 1, hedges — 10 linear metres)
  • Square «Chumatskyi» at the intersection of PSU and Malko-Tyrnivska Street — area 2530 (trees — 67, bushes — 3)
  • Soborna Street from Ihor Benzai Street to Admiralska Street — area 34727 (240 trees)
  • Shevchenko Street from Terasna Street to Hromadianska Street — the area of 11403 (trees — 434, bushes — 110, hedges — 19.4 linear metres)
  • Vadym Blahovysnyi Street from Varvarivskyi Descent to Sadova Street — area 37354 (trees — 591, bushes — 44, hedges — 136.7 linear metres)

More details about the tree species growing there can be found in the appendix:

«Mykolaiv parks» state that they will carry out an inventory of green spaces every year, but they are currently doing it without the support of the city budget. It is estimated that a full inventory of trees in Mykolaiv would cost about 15 million hryvnias, but the city does not have this kind of money.

«When preparing the budget request for the next year, the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks» provides funds for an inventory of green spaces located at the green infrastructure facilities of Mykolaiv, but due to martial law, funds are not allocated for this item of expenditure», the utility company said.

As a reminder, since January 2022, most of Mykolaiv's green areas have been transfer red to the balance sheet of the utility «Mykolaiv Parks». The company takes care of 263 parks, squares and squares, as well as 424 green areas along the streets. Only three parks and Soborna Square remain under the jurisdiction of the Department of Housing and Communal Services. In fact, «Mykolaiv Parks» became the main caretakers of the city's green spaces.

However, since the transfer of all green areas, it is still unclear how many bushes and trees grow there. Mykolaiv's Department of Housing and Communal Services started taking an inventory before 2022, but the work has not been completed. Trees were counted several times — in 2008-2009 and 2015-2018, and only in parks and squares. But the trees along the streets and roads in the city have never been counted.

Tetiana Skybytska, head of the gardening department of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks», explained in a comment to NikVesti that the parks and squares were transferred to the enterprise along with passports, so at least they know what trees are growing there. But the situation with the plantings along the streets is different — no one has recorded them, so there is no accurate data on the types and condition of these trees.

«In fact, all green spaces were transferred to «Mykolaiv Parks» for maintenance and care. While we received passports for squares and parks from the Department of Housing and Communal Services, and we understand what plants are there and in what condition, and what their book value is. We do not have such information on the streets yet. And we do not understand what trees are on this street, how many and in what condition. Until we make an inventory, we can't say for each street,» says Skybytska.

As a reminder, residents of Mykolaiv have repeatedly complained about the way trees, parks and squares are maintained in the city. For example, the citizens pointed out problems with green spaces in Peremohy Park and complained about neglect by the city authorities.

In addition, in Mykolaiv, a «living fence» made of privet has dried up on Tsentralnyi Avenue near the Arkasivske (Pushkinske) ring. These bushes were purchased in 2024 by the utility company «Mykolaiv Parks» for 110 hryvnias per unit as part of a large purchase of greenery totalling 3.5 million hryvnias.

Last year, the utility began dismantling the old cast-iron fence that stretched along the avenue. This fence was installed in Soviet times and consisted of massive sections of cast metal. Already in 2025, Dmytro Chuchmai, director of «Mykolaiv Parks», confirmed during a live broadcast that the cast-iron fence would be completely dismantled.

For landscaping, «Mykolaiv Parks» purchased 13,380 bushes of common privet (Ligustrum vulgare) and other types of shrubs and 83 trees for 3.5 million hryvnias. However, much of the planted shrubs have now dried up. According to Dmytro Riabchenko, a freelance inspector of the South-Western District of the State Inspectorate of Ukraine, this is due to the fact that the bushes are watered a maximum of 1-2 times a month.

As a reminder, the Department of Housing and Communal Services of the Mykolaiv City Council plans to purchase 310 tree seedlings for 1 million hryvnias.

The utility company said that the trees will be planted in the park «Lisky», on the coastal zone of Lazurna Street, on the boulevard part of Pohranychna Street and along Lazurna Street near residential buildings.

It should be noted that in the spring of 2025, not a single tree was planted in Mykolaiv by the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks». However, in April, the city held a campaign «Tree is the life of the community», during which the citizens planted 38 trees.

In October 2023, young pine saplings were planted in the park-monument of landscape art «Victory Park». In March 2024, Mykolaiv residents noticed that some of the trees had turned yellow and died.

The «of Mykolaiv Parks» then replied that the trees were planted with an open root system without an earthen lump, which is why they died.
