Mykolaiv Regional Clinical Hospital performed an operation to remove a blood clot from the patient's brain vessels.

This was reported in a comment to NikVesti by neurosurgeon Oleksandr Nedieliev, a neurosurgeon at the regional clinical hospital.

«We have finally done it. This is the first time such an operation has been performed, and it is the only one in Mykolaiv and Mykolaiv region,» he said.

The patient was admitted to the Mykolaiv hospital from Ochakiv, said Oleksandr Nedieliev.

«We received a patient, he is 53 years old. He suffered a stroke: a large branch of the brain vessels was clogged - the one that supplied blood to the right side of the brain. That is, the left side of the patient did not work completely: his leg, arm, facial asymmetry, severe dysarthria, that is, he tried to speak, but no one understood what he wanted to say,» said the neurosurgeon.

Before the operation, the patient underwent CT perfusion, a type of computed tomography scan used to assess the blood supply to tissues, particularly in the brain.

«The patient was monitored with a CT scan. And in order to expand the so-called therapeutic window for thrombectomy, the team of the computed tomography room performed CT perfusion of the brain.

We have performed it before. But in this case, the CT perfusion was performed very quickly in order to get the patient to the operating room. Without this test, we had no right to take the patient to the operating room,» the hospital explained.

The operation lasted about two hours and was performed by neurosurgeon Oleksandr Nedieliev and cardiac interventionist Volodymyr Mazepa.

«The patient was within the therapeutic window, we performed thrombolysis, that is, we injected a drug that should melt the clot, but unfortunately, the clot was very large and could not melt. That's why we decided to take the patient to the operating table and perform a thrombectomy,» explained Oleksandr Nedieliev.

After the operation, the doctor says, the blood supply to the brain immediately returned and the patient's condition improved.

«In the ward, after the patient began to recover from anaesthesia, we saw his left leg return to work. And then, over time, his arm began to work, and he was able to express himself a little more clearly. The neurological result was very good. He went from a severe stroke to a less disabling condition. The patient is now stable and is being treated by rehabilitation specialists. I really hope that everything will be fine. We managed to make sure that the patient did not become disabled, but nurse back to his health, was able to work and returned to social life,» said Alexander Nedieliev.

We remind you that the Mykolaiv Regional Clinical Hospital has started diagnosing the cause of ischaemic stroke. Doctors can help patients in the first 4-6 hours after the first symptoms appear.

The neurosurgeon also said that since the start of the full-scale war against stroke, more young people have been coming to Mykolaiv hospitals.
