Four new modular public toilets are to be installed in the central part of Odesa. These are Soborna Square, the City Garden, Prymorskyi Boulevard, and Ukrainian Heroes Avenue. The toilets will be inclusive, with access for people with disabilities and modern engineering equipment.

This was discussed at a meeting of the city council on 16 April, according to NikVesti.

The facilities will be installed within the UNESCO zone, where there is already a constant patrol by the National Police and municipal guards. In addition, each module will be equipped with external video surveillance cameras connected to the city's system «Safe City».

«Such things are expensive, but the city needs them. The programme is worth supporting. But what about security? We will buy and install them, but how will they function in the future? We need some kind of administration system so that these facilities do not repeat the fate of the lift on Prymorsky Boulevard, which quickly broke down due to vandalism. We somehow envisage that either our municipal guards will be there or somebody will be able to administer this public toilet,» asked deputy Roman Senik.

According to Deputy Mayor Anna Pozdniakova, each toilet will be under constant supervision. It is also planned to hold a tender for maintenance, as the structures are equipped with electronics and require operational support.

«Indeed, we cannot foresee all acts of vandalism and irresponsible attitude to our common property. But if we are talking specifically about these first four objects, they are installed in the historical area, in the UNESCO zone, where both the National Police and the municipal guard patrol on a regular basis. Of course, we will ask our colleagues to pay attention to these facilities. Since the modules are modern and have a lot of electronics, we will hold another tender for maintenance to avoid downtime. We have also already worked out the lowering of sidewalks at the installation sites to ensure barrier-free access,» said Anna Pozdniakova.

This year, nine stops for people with reduced mobility are being installed on the tram route «North-South», which connects the most remote districts of Odesa.

In addition, Yurii Stepanets, a member of the Mykolaiv City Council, believes that the city authorities should focus more attention on the issue of barrier-free and accessible urban infrastructure for people with disabilities.
