US President Donald Trump has assured that he will not allow the war in Ukraine to escalate to the level of a global conflict.

He said this during a press conference at the White House on 16 October.

Speaking to journalists, Donald Trump said that he had recently had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and was planning to meet with him in Hungary. According to the American leader, the purpose of the talks is to find ways to end the war.

«I got into this situation — I did not start this war. This is Biden's business. And I came in and it was a complete mess that would have led to World War III. In my opinion, it could have happened. But it's not going to happen,» Donald Trump said.

He emphasised that he wanted to «save lives» and help establish peace in Europe, adding that under his presidency, Russia would not have dared to launch a full-scale invasion.

«I'm doing this to save souls. That's all I'm doing this for. I am not doing this for us — there is an ocean between us. But I want to help Europe. They want the war to end, but they can't do it. I can,» he said.

Donald Trump also noted that relations between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia remain «terrible», which complicates peace talks. In addition, he confirmed that he had discussed with Putin the possibility of giving Ukraine Tomahawk missiles, but admitted that «the Russian leader did not like the idea».
