US President Donald Trump has said that he is ready to provide Ukraine with Tomahawk cruise missiles if the war with Russia is not resolved. According to him, such a statement is an element of pressure on the Kremlin, and he plans to discuss this issue personally with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Donald Trump said this on board the presidential aircraft Air Force One, heading to the Middle East to participate in the signing ceremony of the peace agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Speaking to journalists, he compared his approach to the war in Ukraine to the policy of the previous administration.
«Biden gave them (Ukraine, — note) $350 billion. We gave them nothing. But we gave them respect and some other things,» Donald Trump said.
He confirmed that he had discussed the needs of the Ukrainian army with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to Donald Trump, Ukraine wants to receive Patriot systems and Tomahawk missiles.
«I can talk to Putin and say: if this war is not resolved, I will send Tomahawk to Ukraine. To be honest, Russia doesn't need it,» Donald Trump said.
The US president stressed that he has not yet made a final decision on possible deliveries, but considers Tomahawk «to be a powerful weapon» that can change the course of the war.
Donald Trump also noted that the United States must be sure how Ukraine plans to use such weapons before agreeing to the transfer.
Commenting on the possibility of applying the experience of peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas to the Ukrainian context, Donald Trump emphasised: «I think you can never give up. Just never give up».
He called the Ukrainians «very good fighters» and added that Vladimir Putin «would look great» if he resolved this issue peacefully.
«And if he doesn't, it will end badly for him,» Donald Trump concluded.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the decision to provide Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles «had been made to some extent», but stressed that he was not seeking escalation with Russia.
At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that Ukraine's use of Tomahawk missiles «would damage relations between Moscow and Washington». Later, the Kremlin said it was waiting for concrete decisions from the United States on the possible supply of cruise missiles to Ukraine.
