Moldova reports «mining» of foreign polling stations and massive cyberattacks on CEC websites

On the day of the parliamentary elections in Moldova, 28 September, a number of foreign polling stations were reported to be bomb threats. Such signals came from Brussels, Rome, Genoa, Bucharest, Asheville and Alicante.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova stated that such reports are part of Russia's interference in the electoral process.

«State institutions have prepared for this scenario, we have established clear procedures and are cooperating with our partners from other countries to ensure that the electoral process is not affected,» the ministry said.

At the same time, Moldova suffered large-scale cyberattacks. Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that the attacks were directed, in particular, at the website of the Central Election Commission (CEC.md) and several foreign polling stations. According to him, all attempts were detected and neutralised in real time, so they had no impact on the electoral process. In addition, there was a massive attack on the host.md platform, which resulted in the shutdown of about 4,000 websites.

«The attacks were organised simultaneously in order to overload the STISC network, which serves the CEC and other electoral infrastructure,» said Dorin Recean.

According to the CEC, by 17:30, more than 1.3 million Moldovans had exercised their right to vote. More than 204,000 people in the diaspora had voted by this time.

The total number of voters registered in the State Voter Register as of 1 August 2025 is 3,298,443. Polling stations in the country will close at 21:00.
