US President Donald Trump has assured European leaders that he will not raise the issue of Ukrainian territories during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on 15 August. According to him, he will insist on a ceasefire without any conditions.
According to CNN, citing several European diplomats, Trump called the possible ceasefire «a show of goodwill» on the part of Russia, stressing that he would not negotiate a possible exchange of Ukrainian land for peace.
The European leaders stressed that Ukraine should participate in any negotiations concerning its territory. At the same time, sources note that they have low expectations from the meeting.
Trump also expressed support for the idea of security guarantees for Ukraine, with the United States playing a key role. European diplomats saw this as a positive signal.
At the same time, he did not rule out new sanctions against Russia, including secondary restrictions on China's imports of Russian oil, if negotiations with Putin fail. Although the US President did not make any official commitments, according to one diplomat, there is a feeling that sanctions could be imposed shortly after the meeting if it fails.
As a reminder, US President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the US state of Alaska on 15 August.
In addition, the White House is considering inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Alaska, where the meeting is to take place.
President Zelenskyy has also said that a trilateral meeting between the leaders of the United States, Ukraine, and Russia is planned. However, no specific date has been set for the event.
