US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the territorial issue will be the key to ending Russia's war against Ukraine.

He said this in an interview with Fox Business.

According to him, in order to move on to negotiations, there must first be a ceasefire.

«It's hard to discuss the details of a peace agreement when you're shooting at each other,» Marco Rubio said.

He noted that any agreement would include concessions from both Russia and Ukraine.

«This is always a difficult part. But such compromises are part of the peace process,» the Secretary of State added.

Marco Rubio also said that the United States now has a better understanding of the conditions under which Russia might agree to end the war.

«Now we need to compare this with what Ukrainians and European allies are ready to accept. But, above all, the Ukrainians themselves,» he stressed.

These statements were made after US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff visited the Kremlin on 6 August to meet with Vladimir Putin.

Shortly after the US special envoy's visit to Russia, Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke to Donald Trump by phone. He noted that during the conversation, the politicians discussed «what was announced in Moscow». Some European leaders also took part in the conversation.

Earlier, Marco Rubio had already stressed that Washington would work on the issue of peace talks as long as necessary. However, their success depends not only on the United States, but primarily on Ukraine and Russia.

It is also worth noting that, according to US President Donald Trump, there is a high probability that he will meet personally with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
