Trump says meeting with Putin may take place soon

US President Donald Trump has said that there is a high probability that he will have a personal meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Trump said this during a briefing at the White House.

«We had very good talks with Putin today. There is a high probability that the meeting will take place very soon. I can't say for sure — I've been disappointed before. But we have already helped end five wars,» Donald Trump said.

He also commented on the visit of his special envoy Steve Witkoff to the Kremlin: according to Trump, the talks went «very well», although they did not become a breakthrough.

In addition, Trump said that there is «a good prospect» for a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin.

The US president reiterated that thousands of people are dying in Russia's war against Ukraine «and repeated his thesis: «This would not have happened if I had been president from the beginning».

On the morning of 6 August, US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow for a visit.

According to «RIA Novosti», immediately after arriving in Moscow, Vitkoff met with the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev. Together they visited the restaurant «Voshod» in the park «Zariaddia», after which the delegation went to the Kremlin.

Shortly after the US special envoy's visit to Russia, Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke to Donald Trump by phone. He noted that during the conversation, the politicians discussed «what was announced in Moscow». Some European leaders also took part in the conversation.
