The Ministry of Justice is preparing an analysis of the European Court's judgement on the tragedy of 2 May 2014 in Odesa

The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has taken into account the decision of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of the tragedy of 2 May 2014 in Odesa and is preparing a comprehensive analysis of the findings and an action plan.

This was reported by the Ministry's press service.

The Ministry noted that Ukraine remains committed to European values and human rights and respects the role of the European Court of Human Rights.

«The tragedy in Odesa occurred three months after the Revolution of Dignity, when the country still retained the institutional legacy of the Yanukovych regime, especially in the law enforcement system. The shortcomings identified by the ECHR in the actions of the police and fire service demonstrate systemic problems that have been formed over the years of the previous government», the statement said.

The Ministry of Justice noted that the court recognised the significant role of Russian disinformation in inciting hatred before the tragic events. It also confirmed that the officials responsible for the misconduct had fled to Russia and obtained citizenship there. At the same time, the court noted the absence of bias in the investigation against victims of different political views, and also took into account the complexity of the situation for the then-formed government.

The day before, the ECHR found Ukraine guilty of inaction during the clashes between activists in Odesa on 2 May 2014, when 48 people died.

Earlier, the Prosecutor General's Office said that there was no evidence of a deliberate fire in the Odesa Trade Union Building on 2 May 2014.
