A year and a half after the sewer pipe burst at the «Strasse» market in Mykolaiv, only 25 metres of pipe had been replaced

Since the accident on the sewer main at the «Strasse» market in the Namyv neighbourhood, which occurred in February 2025, 25 metres of pipework have been replaced there. As of today, the sewer main remains in a state of disrepair. Repairs are set to continue with funding from donors.

This is stated in the response from the municipal enterprise «Mykolaivvodokanal» to an enquiry from NikVesti.

As a reminder, in February 2025, a sewer main collapsed at the ‘Strasse’ market in Mykolaiv due to gas corrosion. The water utility’s management noted that the market had been built in breach of national building regulations: the market stalls are situated directly above a concrete sewer, which has suffered significant gas corrosion and is in a critical condition.

In response to an enquiry from NikVesti, the water utility reported that, since the accident which occurred a year and a half ago, 25 metres of 500-millimetre-diameter pipework had been replaced.

«The pipeline was replaced using the «Mykolaivvodokanal» municipal enterprise’s own funds and cost the company approximately 170,000 hryvnias,» the company said.

The sewer main remains in a state of disrepair: it needs to be replaced.

«A commission inspection has been carried out, and the repair work has been estimated at 7.69 million hryvnias excluding VAT,» the water utility noted.

To date, a contract for the repair of the collector has been signed with «Ukrspetsoborudovanie» LLC, which offered to carry out the work for 7.49 million hryvnias. The repairs are to be funded by donors.

At the same time, the water utility reported that it had periodically recorded blockages in the sewer main, but there had been no flooding of buildings as a result of the fault. Nor were there any recorded discharges of sewage into the river or the lake in Lisky Park.

As a reminder, residents of Mykolaiv complained in the summer that, for several weeks, sewage had been flowing into the Bug Estuary on Namyv. The water utility explained that the cause was a collapse in the sewer collector, but did not specify whether this was the collector at the «Strasse» market. The water utility also noted that they had organised the pumping of sewage, but were unable to quickly stop the leak due to a shortage of staff and the curfew. Meanwhile, the State Environmental Inspectorate confirmed the pollution of the water body.

Hennadii Iziumov, director of the water utility, identified the sewerage mains as the most problematic areas, as they are deteriorating due to gas corrosion. With the help of international donors, the company plans to step up the work of its rehabilitation workshop and repair the mains.
