In Manhanariivskyi Square in Mykolaiv, the benches have been replaced following an incident in which a child was injured there

The benches at the sports ground in «The Heart of the City» (Manhanariivskyi square) have been replaced. This came about after a child cut their leg on a metal corner on one of the benches.

This was reported by NikVesti.

As a reminder, a resident of Mykolaiv reported that her daughter had cut her leg on a metal corner of a bench at the sports ground in «The Heart of the City» — the wound had to be stitched up at hospital. The woman pointed out that other benches also had dangerous parts.

As of 15 July, the benches at the sports ground had damaged slats, exposing sharp metal edges.

Following this incident, the municipal enterprise «DEZ Pilot» told NikVesti that they had repaired the other benches on the sports ground to prevent similar injuries. The boards on the benches have now been replaced and the benches repainted.

Furthermore, the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks», which is responsible for maintaining the «The Heart of the City», responded to an enquiry from NikVesti that, as of July, they had replaced and painted the timber on 86 benches along the footpaths and by the fountain.

As a reminder, in February, following a spell of frost, the ground subsided in the ‘Heart of the City’ in Mykolaiv, and the paving slabs were damaged in places.

Ihor Nabatov, Deputy Director of the Mykolaiv Department of Housing and Communal Services, explained that this section is situated above a water main. According to him, the construction of the facility was commissioned by the Regional State Administration’s Department of Architecture. The City Council has transferred the role of client for a number of water mains, including this one, to the regional department.

In February, «Mykolaivvodokanal» reported that this water main had not yet been commissioned or transferred to the company’s balance sheet, and was therefore not being used for water supply. It was initially thought that the ground subsidence might have been caused by a leak in the underground water main.

Subsequently, part of the surface covering was removed. The area was cordoned off with warning tape, and the site was filled with sand to prepare the sub-base for re-laying.

However, in March, repair work was halted at the site where the ground had previously subsided. Since then, the situation has only worsened — the sinkhole has grown larger. The area has still not been restored.
