There are 16 registered cemeteries in Mykolaiv. The city budget has allocated 24.3 million hryvnias for their maintenance and routine repairs in 2026.
This was reported by the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Funeral Service» in response to an enquiry from NikVesti.
The funeral service clarified that Mykolaiv has a «Comprehensive Programme to Support Defenders of Ukraine, Their Family Members and the Family Members of Fallen (Deceased) Defenders of Ukraine». 12.8 million hryvnias have been allocated from the budget to implement the programme.
The funeral service has planned for 2026 the ongoing renovation of the «Alley of Glory» at the Nove Matviivske Cemetery (Velyke) and the BalabanivskeCemetery (Nove Korabelne). The municipal services are to install uniform grave markers and flagpoles with the Ukrainian flag on the graves of defenders buried in the sections for honourable military burials at cemeteries in Mykolaiv.
«This includes the manufacture of grave markers, engraving, the purchase of grave marker components, flagpoles and flags, and maintaining them in good condition, carrying out repair work at cemeteries in the Mykolaiv City Territorial Community, the construction and repair of toilets, and the cleaning of cemeteries,» the funeral service explained the list of works.
It should be noted that in Mykolaiv, the condition of the graves of fallen soldiers will be inspected and control over order in cemeteries will be tightened.
It should be noted that residents of Velyka Korenyha had previously complained about the lack of a toilet block at the cemetery in their neighbourhood. The funeral service reported that out of Mykolaiv’s 16 cemeteries, six have toilets: at the Central City Cemetery (Staroruske), at the Mishkovske Cemetery in the Ingulskyi district, the cemetery in the Korabelnyi district bounded by Andrii Antoniuk Street, Haharin Street and Bohoiavlenskyi Avenue (Stare), the Balabanivske Cemetery, the Nove Matviivske Cemetery (Velyke) and the cemetery in Mala Korenyha on Borys Mozolevskoy Street.
«In 2026, the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Funeral Service» plans to carry out routine repairs to the public toilets at the Nove Matviivske Cemetery (Velyke) and at the cemetery in the Korabelnyi district, bounded by Andrii Antoniuk Street, Haharin Street and Bohoiavlenskyi Avenue (Stare),» the funeral service reported.
As a reminder, construction of a columbarium on the grounds of the Central City Cemetery in Mykolaiv has been completed. It has been officially commissioned. It features 156 niches for urns. It is noted that the project cost 2.7 million hryvnias.
As reported to NikVesti by Serhii Vaseleha, director of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Funeral Service», as there are only three crematoria in Ukraine, the deceased are transported from Mykolaiv to Odesa.
Back in 2021, Vitalii Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, expressed the view that a crematorium should be built on the border with the Kherson region.
It was also reported that the Land Resources Department had drafted a resolution for the Mykolaiv City Council to allocate a plot of land for permanent use to maintain the cemetery. This refers to the area near the Starovodopiy Cemetery on Kazarskyi Street.
At the Central City Cemetery, known to Mykolaiv residents as the Mishkovske Cemetery, there are no plots available in the honour section. It is proposed to expand the cemetery grounds by moving the boundary fence.
