The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, said that the future of the destroyed building of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration will be determined with the participation of the townspeople — but this will be done after the war is over.

He said this on the air of the radio station «Suspilne.Mykolaiv».

According to him, it will also be important to involve as many architects and specialised professionals as possible.

«It is difficult for us to discuss this now because the war is still ongoing, the memories of those people who lost their loved ones. And I think we will be able to assess these events only after the war is over. And then make a decision. It is important to take into account the opinion of citizens, public participation in city planning, it is important. It is important to involve as many architects and professionals as possible to suggest how this space can be used. I think we have enough resources and intelligence to do it right. But, again, after the war is over. It's not the right time now,» explained Sienkevych.

The tragedy that claimed the lives of 36 people

As you know, the Russian army attacked the building of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration on 29 March 2022. The enemy launched an «Iskander-K» missile from the temporarily occupied Crimea. As a result of the shelling, the central section of the building collapsed from the ninth to the first floor, and it took rescuers almost a week to clear the rubble.

After the search operation was completed, it became known that the tragedy claimed the lives of 36 people who had come to work that morning. These were employees of departments and offices of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, the military and employees of the Mykolaiv Regional Economic Court, which was also located in the destroyed building.

Later, law enforcement officers found out that the order to attack the building was given by the former commander of the Southern Military District, Russian Army General Aleksandr Dvornikov. He was notified of suspicion in February 2025.
