Pensions in Mykolaiv region are below average: how much do pensioners receive and who lives on the minimum?

In southern Ukraine, pensions remain lower than the national average. For example, pensioners in the Mykolaiv region received an average of 6,241 hryvnias last year, which is 303 hryvnias less than the national average. In the Odesa region, the average pension was 6,317 hryvnias, and in the Kherson region, it was only 5,541 hryvnias.

Overall, as of 1 January 2026, the average pension in Ukraine was 6,544 hryvnias. Payments increased by 13% over the year, according to analysts at OpenDataBot, as reported by NikVesti.

The highest average pensions are traditionally recorded in Kyiv — almost nine thousand hryvnias, the lowest — in the Ternopil region, slightly more than five thousand hryvnias. The largest increase in payments over the year occurred in the Rivne (+24%) and Volyn (+20%) regions.

At the same time, the size of payments varies significantly depending on the category of pensioners. More than 35% of people of retirement age receive about 3,250 hryvnias per month. Over the year, the share of such pensioners has decreased from 44%.

Another 20% of pensioners receive an average of 4,500 hryvnias, and 30% receive about 6,860 hryvnias. At the same time, 15% of pensioners (over 1.5 million) receive payments of more than ten thousand hryvnias, and the average pension in this group reaches 16 thousand hryvnias.

According to the Pension Fund, 63,000 pensioners receive payments below the subsistence minimum, and another 261,000 live at the minimum level of 2,361 hryvnias.

It should be noted that there are over ten million pensioners in Ukraine. Most of them — 73% or 7.4 million — receive old-age pensions. Disability pensions are received by 15%, survivor pensions by 7%, and 5% receive payments for length of service. Social pensions and lifetime maintenance for judges account for less than 1%.

The largest number of pensioners live in the Dnipropetrovsk region — 867,000, followed by Kyiv, Kharkiv and Lviv regions. The smallest number live in the Kherson and Chernivtsi regions.

According to data from the Pension Fund, almost 83% of pensioners receive payments through banks, most often through PrivatBank and Oschadbank. More than 17% receive funds through Ukrposhta. At the same time, pensions are not the only source of income for many: one in four pensioners in Ukraine continues to work. There are 2.8 million such citizens, and their average pension is 7,160 hryvnias.

It should be noted that in April 2025, pensioners in the Mykolaiv region received an average of 6,083 hryvnias.
