The government has allocated 334 million hryvnias for the purchase of water supply equipment and infrastructure rehabilitation. Mykolaiv will receive part of this equipment.
This was reported by the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine.
The city will receive water treatment plants and equipment to help ensure a stable water supply. Kharkiv, Dnipro, Kherson and Kyiv will also receive similar equipment.
In addition to the infrastructure projects of the Recovery Agency, the funds have been allocated to support other areas: the purchase of equipment for stable energy supply, equipment for educational institutions, equipment and construction for humanitarian mine action by the SES, medical equipment and border security.
Mykolaiv needs clean water
Although the new water supply system was launched in October 2025, this does not mean that there will be drinking water in the taps immediately. This was stated by Kristina Mikulova, a representative of the European Investment Bank, to NikVesti. According to her, the city needs to build a new water purification system — without this, the water supply system will not produce the expected result.
Deputy Mayor Serhii Koreniev explained that the Reconstruction Agency is working on modernising the treatment facilities. The plan is to launch them simultaneously with the new water main. Vitalii Kim, the head of the RMA, has repeatedly said that he does not want to rush into a large loan for these works, although the EIB was ready to provide more than €100 million.
Later, it became known that the State Agency for Reconstruction, on behalf of the government, is now engaged in a project to modernise water treatment for Mykolaiv.
On 7 October, Mykolaiv was connected to a new water supply system. It is already operating in the system of «Mykolaivvodokanal». The treatment plant has replaced 4 out of 8 filters, with 4 more to be replaced in the near future. The city continues to flush the networks, which is why you can see open fire hydrants on the streets. This is a planned work, not an emergency.
Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych said that drinking water could be available in February 2026. However, in a recent interview, Vitalii Kim suggested that this could happen much faster — in about 2-4 weeks — if the work on the treatment plant is completed on time and the laboratories give «the green light».
Currently, Mykolaiv plans to build additional treatment facilities by the end of the year, which should significantly improve water quality. Their funding is provided from the state budget.
