The Toponymic Commission is an advisory body within local self-government that deals with naming and renaming toponymic objects such as streets, squares, parks, and other geographical names. The commission's primary goal is to organize the toponymic space according to historical, cultural, and national traditions.

Toponymy is the study of the origin, meaning, and functions of geographical names. It is interdisciplinary and combines knowledge from history, geography, linguistics, and cultural studies.

The commission is responsible for:

  • Reviewing proposals for naming or renaming.
  • Analyzing the historical and cultural context of geographical names.
  • Preparing recommendations for authorities on toponymic changes.
  • Commemorating significant individuals or events through the naming of objects.
