On Friday, April 26, Mykolaiv commemorated the firefighters and emergency service specialists who died as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Mykolaiv rescuers, military and deputies honored the memory in the square «Feat of liquidators of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant» in the Ingul district of the city.

«On this day, 38 years ago, one of the biggest man-made disasters of the century happened — the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Hundreds of firefighters and emergency services specialists worked on its liquidation, risking their lives. Only the self-sacrifice of those heroes made it possible to contain the fire and protect the country and the world from even greater pollution,» the message said.

As a mark of respect to all the liquidators of the accident, flowers were laid at the «Sorrowful Angel of Chernobyl» memorial.

The event was attended by Deputy Mayor Anatoliy Petrov, Director of the Department of Labor and Social Protection of the City Council Serhii Vasylenko, representatives of the RMA, the Regional Council, the police, the State Emergency Service and the public.
