The team from the Prybuzke Lyceum in the Mykolaiv region underwent training in project management as part of the «School Up» project and received a grant to refurbish their workspace.

This was reported to NikVesti by the «Skhid SOS» Charitable Foundation.

Before the full-scale war began, the Prybuzke Lyceum had its own three-storey building, fully equipped classrooms and technical facilities. Following Russian shelling, the school suffered damage, and some of the village’s residents were forced to evacuate.

Initially, lessons were moved online, and later partially resumed as face-to-face teaching in the village council building. Only a few rooms were allocated to the school there. One of them was used as a workspace for 18 teachers.

«We set up desks, one printer, and took turns working. Four or five people could fit in there at a time. That’s where we prepared lessons, held online classes, and printed materials. In fact, it was our only workspace,» the teachers recall.

The school team took part in the «School Up» training programme run by the «Skhid SOS» Charitable Foundation, where teachers learnt the basics of project management and how to find solutions to the problems facing their institutions.

While working on the project, the teachers conducted an internal study and concluded that the lack of a proper workspace affects not only comfort but also work efficiency.

Teachers note that they regularly spent their own money on printing materials, and the lack of technology and equipment took up extra time preparing for lessons.

It was then that the team decided to focus not only on the pupils’ needs, but also on the teachers’ working conditions.

«Our school has been destroyed; we are currently working in a makeshift building. We have absolutely no space for teachers to work. Over the years of the war, we have tried to do everything we could for the children. We somehow always put ourselves last. And I suppose the time has come to look after ourselves,» said Aliona Shykova, headteacher of the Prybuzke Lyceum.

As a result, the team received a grant to implement the project «Mission 4.5.0. Protection. Control. Peace of Mind». Its aim is to set up a modern workspace for teachers, equip it with the necessary technology, and create tools to help teachers organise their working hours more effectively.

«We don’t need anything extraordinary. We simply want to work comfortably. To be able to prepare lesson materials, print out the necessary assignments, and conduct classes with a stable internet connection. Sometimes — just to have a cup of tea and take a breather between the stresses,» say the project participants.

The team is currently working on setting up the new space. Nineteen teachers from the lyceum will be directly involved in the project. At the same time, the school is convinced that the benefits will be felt not only by the teachers, but also by the 118 pupils at the school, their families, and educators from other schools in the community.

«We are not used to waiting for someone to come and do everything for us. If an opportunity arises, we get involved. Because we want not just to keep the school going, but to make it better, even during the war,» says the school’s headteacher, Aliona Shykova.

As a reminder, the non-governmental organisation «Pivden Centre for Adult Learning and Education» has opened registration for a series of free educational and creative events for young people in Mykolaiv. Participants are offered masterclasses in ceramics and art therapy, entrepreneurship training, as well as a simulation game on community development.
