Mykolaiv’s first columbarium has opened: the work cost ₴2.7 million

Construction of a columbarium on the grounds of the Central City Cemetery in Mykolaiv has been completed. It has been officially opened.

This was reported by Mykolaiv City Council.

A columbarium is a structure for storing urns containing the ashes of the deceased. It is noted that city residents will now be able to use an alternative method of burial and place urns in specially designated niches.

The new columbarium is situated along the central pedestrian walkway, approximately 100 metres from the main entrance to the cemetery, which locals refer to as Mishkovske. It features 156 niches for urns. It is noted that the project cost 2.7 million hryvnias.

«The company provides a full range of funeral services, including cremation, delivery of the urn, its placement in the columbarium or burial. However, if the cremation was carried out independently, an application must be submitted for the placement of the urn, along with all documents confirming the cremation. After that, the family can choose a niche and have the urn installed in accordance with the established procedure,» said Serhii Vaseleha, director of the Mykolaiv Funeral Service.

Serhii Vaseleha also noted that the placement of the urn itself is free of charge; only the production and installation of a plaque with specific engraving, as requested by the client, is payable.

As a reminder, the construction of the city’s first columbarium at the Mishkovske Cemetery, which was due to be completed by the end of 2024, was delayed due to the mobilisation of workers. The deadline was then pushed back to mid-2025.

At the Central City Cemetery, known to Mykolaiv residents as Mishkovske, there are no burial plots left in the honour section. It is proposed to expand the cemetery grounds by moving the boundary fence.

In addition, the Land Resources Department has drafted a resolution for the Mykolaiv City Council to allocate a plot of land for the permanent use of the cemetery. This concerns the area near the Starovodopiiske Cemetery on Kazarskyi Street.
