Funding for road cleaning in Mykolaiv has fallen tenfold due to the war

In Mykolaiv, funding for road cleaning in 2025 has been cut by around tenfold compared to previous years.

This was revealed by Vitalii Shevchenko, director of the company «ELU Avtodorig», during a live broadcast on Facebook, according to NikVesti.

According to him, this year the company has been assigned some of the work previously carried out by district administrations. This includes, in particular, the cleaning of the city’s streets.

«We don’t work at the same pace as the district administrations, but this is because funding is very limited — it’s about ten times less than it usually was,» he said.

Currently, the municipal services first clear the roads by hand, after which specialised machinery is deployed to clean the road surface. According to the company’s director, 72 streets have already been cleared by hand, whilst the road sweepers are covering 217 kilometres of roads.

Residents have also complained on social media about the performance of the new road sweepers. According to Vitalii Shevchenko, the equipment required additional fine-tuning and adaptation.

«At first, the vacuum cleaners didn’t work very well — they were noisy and kicked up dust. But this is new equipment for us, and we’re still learning how to use it. Now they’re working much better, and we understand how everything should function,» he explained.

As a reminder, in the first two months of 2026, the municipal enterprise «ELU Avtodorig» spent 260,000 hryvnias on renting street-sweeping and cleaning equipment, although at that time no mechanised cleaning was being carried out in the city due to ‘wet’ conditions on the roads.

It should be noted that in August, the executive committee of the Mykolaiv City Council, on its second attempt, supported the launch of mechanised street and road cleaning using equipment purchased for the city with state budget funds. It is noted that cleaning with this equipment will reduce expenditure from the local budget by a factor of three.

We would also like to remind you that there are plans to officially assign new functions to the municipal enterprise «ELU Avtodorig» — ranging from the demolition of dilapidated buildings to the maintenance of areas around residential buildings.

The equipment planned for these tasks was received by the enterprise as part of aid from the Japanese organisation JICA. It is currently being used at a construction waste processing site, where waste has accumulated as a result of Russian shelling of the city, but it is also suitable for demolition and clearing work.
