Next winter, Ukraine will have a regular electricity supply. This was stated by Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Research Centre, commenting on the state of the power system after the latest attacks by the Russian Federation.

He spoke about this in an interview with NV.

According to the expert, the most difficult situation is currently observed in Kyiv, Odesa, Kryvyi Rih, and Dnipro. More than 1,100 residential buildings in the capital remain without heating, so they are provided with electricity as much as possible, except during peak hours. This, in turn, makes it difficult to adhere to the power cut schedules in other areas of the city.

The Kyiv authorities plan to launch gas turbine and gas piston units with a total capacity of up to 400 MW by the next heating season.

Kharchenko noted that the total electricity deficit in the country is about 30%. Frequent emergency outages are caused by transformer overload. Even after the restoration of thermal power plants, only 40-45% of their capacity will be restored by next winter.

«This is very helpful and will help us get through the next winter more calmly, but at the same time, it guarantees that there will be restrictions, especially during the cold season, and we need to prepare our homes very thoroughly,» said Oleksandr Kharchenko.

He also added that generators are currently used exclusively to provide critical infrastructure. International partners have already allocated funds for the purchase of the necessary equipment.

Kharchenko separately noted that nuclear power plants are forced to periodically reduce their capacity due to damage to substations, but algorithms for responding to such situations have already been worked out.

We would like to remind you that due to power shortages and damage to power grids caused by two massive attacks by the Russian Federation on the energy system this week, it has not yet been possible to cancel emergency blackouts in most regions of Ukraine.
