The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, has said that he has no comments on the work of the city's chief architect, Yevhen Poliakov, and considers the work of the architecture department to be effective.

He said this during a press conference on 11 December, according to NikVesti.

According to the mayor, the Department of Architecture is currently demonstrating a high level of work, in particular in streamlining documentation and implementing modern approaches to urban development and urban planning.

«I rate the Department of Architecture at a very good level. I believe that the Department of Architecture is clearing out thousands of files that have been lying around, introducing new trends in working with architecture, planning, and urban planning. I listen to international experts who talk about our successes, which are recognised in Ukraine and abroad», said Oleksandr Sienkevych.

At the same time, the mayor drew attention to problems in the field of culture, especially the chronic lack of funding. According to him, the city lacks funds to fully develop this area.

We would like to remind you that during the investigation of the situation with the permits for the construction of a petrol station at the intersection of Bohoiavlenskyi Avenue and Kobera Street, it turned out that the chief architect of Mykolaiv, Yevhen Poliakov, was unaware that 182 oak trees were planned to be demolished there. He was also unable to express his opinion on the construction of a petrol station in this green zone.

In addition, the architecture department's work on the city's new master plan was unsuccessful. Mykolaiv did not receive a new document in 2025. Today, the city lives by the master plan approved 16 years ago and only updates the topographical baseline data for planning for the next year.

However, Yevhen Poliakov plans to halve the number of billboards on Mykolaiv's main streets within two years — from over a thousand to 350-400. Large advertising structures will be gradually dismantled and replaced with less intrusive advertising, including backlights. To this end, the city is developing a comprehensive outdoor advertising scheme for key avenues.

It is also worth noting that the Department of Architecture has recently held various architectural competitions, including a competition for the design of memorials in honour of law enforcement officers, a competition for the best reconstruction project for Maternity Hospital No. 3, a competition for architects for the restoration of the House of Fleet Officers (DOF), and a competition for the construction of a tram substation.
