The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, has promised to find out how much money the city will spend if the street lights are not switched off until midnight.
He said this during a session of the Mykolaiv City Council on Tuesday, 30 September, according to NikVesti.
At the meeting, deputy Tetiana Dombrovska said that she had been repeatedly approached by Mykolaiv residents asking why the city's lights were switched off after 23:00. In particular, she cited the example of neighbouring Odesa, where the lights are switched off after 00:00.
The mayor replied that the issue was only about saving budgetary funds, but promised to find out how much it would cost Mykolaiv to extend the lighting for an extra hour.
«As far as I know, we had this situation before the war. Switching the lights off and on is governed solely by the issue of cost savings. At your request, let's find out how much this one hour costs Mykolaiv per day, per month, and if we are ready to make such a decision together with you, we can decide on additional lighting until midnight. The Director of the Department of Housing and Communal Services will inform us about this at the next session,» said Oleksandr Sienkevych.
As a reminder, in 2024, in order to save electricity, Mykolaiv planned to stop lighting the adjacent territories and buildings of executive bodies, as well as reduce lighting on the streets and in parks.
In May 2024, Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych shared plans to completely replace the city's lighting with LED technology to minimise electricity consumption.
In particular, in 2023, 9,000 outdoor sodium lamps were replaced with LED lighting in the city.
