Deputies of Pivdenoukrainsk give the go-ahead for the construction of a nuclear reactor components plant

The Pivdennoukrainsk City Council has approved the location, design and construction of a nuclear facility for the production of fuel assemblies for nuclear reactors at nuclear power plants.

The relevant draft decision was supported by the deputies on Thursday, 25 September, at an extraordinary meeting of the session, according to NikVesti.

This was the only draft decision submitted to the session. The issue was approved quickly and without discussion. Serhii Myskiv, head of the legal department of the staff of the South Ukrainian City Council and its executive committee, read out the draft decision and the deputies proceeded to vote. The document was supported by 21 deputies.

It was also noted that the project would create new jobs and increase tax revenues. According to the decision of the session, Mayor Valerii Onufrienko should immediately sign the document and send a copy to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.

What does the construction involve?

The fact that Energoatom is going to build a complex for the production of fuel assemblies for nuclear power plants — nuclear fuel components — near Yuzhnoukrainsk became known last spring.

Public hearings were held in the city on this issue.

The new enterprise will produce nuclear fuel for VVER-1000 reactors operated at Ukrainian nuclear power plants. The production is to be located on a site of about 7 hectares.

Technological operations for the manufacture of fuel assemblies include the following stages

• manufacturing stainless steel products (heads and shanks);
• assembling fuel assemblies;
• control of manufactured fuel assemblies;
• preparation for shipment and temporary storage.

The project will implement Westinghouse technology. The production process at the future enterprise involves the actual mechanical assembly of nuclear fuel for VVER-1000 reactors from ready-made components. Some of them are already manufactured at the facilities of «Energoatom».

Earlier it was reported that Ukraine expects to start construction of four new nuclear reactors as it seeks to compensate for the energy capacities lost due to the war with Russia.
