A prosthetic and orthotic workshop is to be opened in Mykolaiv at the 4th City Hospital by the end of the year. The city has received the necessary equipment from German partners, and the specialists have already been trained.
This was announced by Iryna Shamrai, head of the Mykolaiv Health Department, at a meeting of the Mykolaiv City Council's specialised commission on human rights, children, family, legality, and publicity, according to NikVesti.
«By the end of the year, a rehabilitation workshop will be opened and a prosthetic and orthotic workshop will be set up at the 4th City Hospital. Repair work is already being completed there. I think you can see how many people have returned from captivity, how many discharged soldiers have returned. And every day we meet guys and girls without arms and legs. It will be like shoes, they will need to be changed every three years», says the head of the health department.
In 2024, the German company Horus Prosthetics GmbH donated equipment worth 50,000 euros to Mykolaiv. It is currently undergoing certification at the 4th City Hospital. Iryna Shamrai also noted that specialists from Mykolaiv have already been trained.
«We have to partially purchase the materials from the city budget until we have verified all the equipment we have. Today, we are verifying the equipment from the German company Horus and the equipment we received from the German company Ottobock. Today, our prosthetists have been trained twice in Germany and will continue to be trained», said Iryna Shamrai.
Earlier, it was expected that the prosthetics centre would be able to produce up to 40 prostheses per month.
As reported, on 22 May 2024, the State Property Fund sold the unified property complex «The Mykolaiv State Experimental Prosthetic and Orthopaedic Enterprise» for 7.15 million hryvnias at an auction.
In March 2024, Iryna Shamrai, head of the healthcare department of the Mykolaiv City Council, said that another rehabilitation unit could be opened at a hospital in Mykolaiv, where military personnel could use prosthetics services free of charge. Similar departments have already been opened at Mykolaiv city hospitals №4 and №5.
