In Mykolaiv, kindergartens are temporarily closed due to a lack of water supply. Currently, the city education department does not know when the educational process will resume.
This was reported by Anna Lychko, head of the Education Department of the Mykolaiv City Council, in a comment to NikVesti.
On Monday, 14 July, parents began to receive notifications that children would not be admitted to kindergartens from 15 July due to water supply problems. To clarify the situation, NikVesti contacted Anatolii Petrov, Deputy Mayor of Mykolaiv for Humanitarian Affairs, but he was unable to comment on the situation.
An explanation was provided by the head of the education department of Mykolaiv City Council, Hanna Lychko. According to her, the closure of kindergartens is a forced measure, as they will not be able to operate without a centralised water supply.
«We have kindergartens on a centralised water supply, so we have nowhere else to get water. We have suspended the educational process until tomorrow. If the water is restored, we will resume the process in the usual format... We cannot do without water. We need to cook, wash the dishes. We need to wash the children's hands. It's all interconnected,» says Hanna Lychko.
She also noted that some kindergartens have wells, but they are used to supply water to the population.
«Some of us have wells, but these wells were also used to supply water to the population. Therefore, if we work for a kindergarten, the population will be without water. In educational institutions, most water treatment systems operate on the water utility network,» she added.
As a reminder, in the morning Mykolaiv residents were warned about problems with water supply due to an accident at the facility of the Inhulets River Canal Authority. Vitalii Kim, Head of Mykolaiv Regional Water Administration, said that crews were working to fix the accident and that the repairs were expected to be completed within 24 hours.
However, the website of Mykolaivvodokanal does not specify the timeframe for the restoration work. As of 15:30, the utility company said that specialists were doing everything possible to eliminate the consequences and asked the townspeople to remain calm and not panic.
