On 7 July, the Flag of Hope was solemnly raised in Mykolaiv on the main square next to the National Flag of Ukraine. It is a symbol of support for all Ukrainians who are in captivity or missing.

The event was reported by the Mykolaiv City Council. The social initiative was launched by Serhii Volynskyi, Hero of Ukraine and chairman of the «Stalni» charity foundation.

According to Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych, Mykolaiv joined the action to reaffirm that Mykolaiv residents are waiting for all those who are currently in captivity.

«Today we are raising the Flag of Hope, which is a symbol that Mykolaiv residents are waiting for each and every one of those who are currently in captivity or missing. We are waiting for them with all our hearts and hope that they are all alive and will return to their families in the near future,» said Oleksandr Sienkevych.

Serhii Volynskyi noted that although the flag is simple in design, its meaning is deep.

«I want to say a big thank you to the region and the city for supporting this initiative. The Flag of Hope seems to be very simple, but there is a whole universe in its two colours. Black symbolises death, fear, torture, captivity, disappearance. White is the belief in return,» said Serhii Volynskyi.

It is noted that the flag of Hope was raised by Halyna and Mykola Hrytseniak, military men who survived captivity, withstood all the trials and returned to their families.

Earlier it was reported that a white and black flag was raised at more than a hundred railway stations across Ukraine.
