In Mykolaiv, a man in a wheelchair could not get to his apartment on the 6th floor for several hours due to a sudden lift shutdown.

The man reported the situation to the editorial office of NikVesti.

According to him, he was told by the management company «Pivden» that the lift was switched off because of a debt. He could not get home on his own, so he was forced to seek help.

Yurii Stepanets, a member of the city council, responded to the call. He helped to organise the man's access to his apartment.

The editorial team found out that the residents of this house have been suffering for a long time because of the confrontation between two service companies — «Pivden» and «City for people». According to the residents, one company after another comes «to service», changing the locks on the panels, switching the lift on and off. Because of this confusion, people do not know who to pay, and debts are accumulating.

Deputy Yurii Stepanets said he would raise the issue at the next meeting of the city council's specialised committee on housing and communal services.

As a reminder, Mykolaiv deputies asked to resume the work of the committee on accessibility for people with disabilities, which ceased operations during the full-scale war.

In August 2024, the Mykolaiv City Council approved the target programme «Mykolaiv without Barriers» for 2024-2026. The programme should enable the formation of a comprehensive system for the rehabilitation and integration of people with disabilities, as well as strengthen social protection of people with disabilities and other people with limited mobility.

It should be noted that according to the Dostupno.UA rating, in 2021, Mykolaiv ranked 13th among 19 large cities in terms of accessibility.

On 13 June 2023,  the conference «Barrier-Free Ukraine» was held in Mykolaiv, where the «Barrier-Free Guide» was presented.

During the conference, Yurii Stepanets, a deputy of the Mykolaiv City Council, reminded that the city authorities should focus more attention on the issue of barrier-free accessibility and accessibility of urban infrastructure for people with disabilities.
