Since the beginning of the war, Mykolaiv has been planning to open three official recreation areas by the water.
This is described in the article «The sea is off limits. Where is it safe to relax in Mykolaiv region in summer?»
All beaches in Mykolaiv where there is a possibility of massive crowds are subject to detailed inspections. The SES divers involved are not only checking the water condition, but also examining the areas for dangerous objects or contamination.
«The sea remains closed for swimming. Only those places that have been inspected by SES divers and found to be safe for people will be open. Even where the beaches are unofficial but people are having a rest, we check the bottom to minimise the risks,» explained Roman Vozniak, Head of the Department for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection.
As Volodymyr Kozarev, deputy head of the underwater demining group, explains, the priority is given to those areas where the most holidaymakers appear. They are selected based on instructions from the military administration and agreed with all services.
«We work in the places where people are most likely to have a rest. We don't have to wait for someone to tell us. We choose locations with the most people and where it is impossible to control them. Therefore, these areas must be safe,» says Volodymyr Kozariev.
There will be no shelters directly near the beaches, but according to the standards, there should be a shelter zone within a radius of 500 metres in case of air raid alert. The city council is also considering the option of installing modular portable shelters — however, the final decision depends on the availability of funding.
This is the first time since 2022 that Mykolaiv has officially opened waterfront recreation areas. As a reminder, in 2024, at a meeting of the Commission on Technogenic and Environmental Safety at the Mykolaiv City Council on 29 May, it was decided to extend the ban on beaches and other places of public recreation on the beaches of Mykolaiv.
This decision also bans the use of floating craft, water attractions, as well as water sports and physical fitness activities.
