A solar power plant, which had been planned to be built since 2019, has been opened in the Chornobyl exclusion zone.
This was reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources.
The power plant consists of 2244 monocrystalline solar modules on an area of 13 thousand square metres, and its total cost has reached more than 30 million hryvnias.
The funds were allocated by the Spanish government for greenhouse gas emission quotas under the Kyoto Protocol, said Svitlana Hrynchuk, Minister of Environmental Protection.
She explained that the construction of a power plant in the Chornobyl zone had been planned since 2019, but the project had to be suspended due to the start of a full-scale invasion. In the autumn of 2024, construction reached the final stage.
According to the minister, the solar power plant in Chornobyl is an opportunity to turn the territory of the past tragedy into a centre for clean energy generation and sustainable development.
The ministry noted that the new solar power plant is already connected to the integrated power system of Ukraine and is ready to be launched. The power plant has a capacity of 0.8 MW, according to «Ukrinform».
Earlier, Vladyslav Sokolovskyi, Chairman of the Board of the Association of Solar Energy of Ukraine, said that in 2024, approximately 800-850 MW of solar power plants were built in Ukraine at the expense of businesses and households, as quoted by the news agency «Interfax-Ukraine».
As a reminder, as part of the project to build a water supply system for Mykolaiv, it is planned to install solar power plants at pumping stations, which will reduce electricity costs. Accordingly, the cost of the water tariff for citizens should be lower.
