In Mykolaiv, by order of the Ministry of Culture, 8 objects were deprived of the status of historical monuments. They were recognized as not subject to entry into the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine.

This is stated in the Ministry's orders №728 and №729, NikVesti writes.

Thus, the list of objects of cultural heritage, which were deprived of the status of historical monuments, included:

• Historical monument of 1918 «The site of battles of Red Army soldiers with German interventionists» at 4 Moskovska Street;
• Historical monument of 1882-1887 «The building where V.L. Shantser» on 1st Slobidska Street, 2;
• Historical monument of 1905 «The house where the meetings of the Council of Workers' Deputies were held in 1905» at 64 Shevchenko Street;
• Historical monument of 1917 «The house where the Council of Workers' and Military Deputies was housed in 1917» at 68 Nikolska Street;
• Historical monument of 1918 «The place where Soviet power was proclaimed in Mykolaiv» at 48 Spaska Street;
• Historical monument of 1919 «The place where the building used to receive volunteers for the International Division was located» at 67 Velyka Morska street;
• Historical monument of 1820 and 1824 «The place where there was an inn where O.S. Pushkin» at 64 Shevchenko Street;
• A monument of history in 1919 and 1985. The place where the building that housed the headquarters of the 58th division under the command of I.F. Fedka» on the site of the old railway station.

The Department of Protection of Cultural Heritage of Mykolaiv added that buildings that had dual status as historical monuments and architectural monuments of local importance lose only the title of historical.

During the full-scale war in Ukraine, particularly in Mykolaiv, the process of decolonization, i.e., getting rid of the Soviet heritage, which began at the time of the collapse of the USSR, intensified.

We will remind that in the yacht club of Mykolaiv, where the bust of Hryhorii Potemkin was removed from the pedestal, a vase with a plant was installed.

It was also reported that Mykolayiv authorities plan to dismantle the monument to the communists and install it in a museum.

Earlier, the mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych proposed to change the appearance of Mykolaiv's coat of arms. According to him, the image of the modern coat of arms shows a galley with oars, which demonstrates the slave ideology during the struggle of Ukrainians for freedom. To replace the coat of arms, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych announced a contest with a prize fund of 200,000 hryvnias for the best proposed version of the sketch.

Mykolayiv City Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych suggests moving the date of the City Day celebration. Usually, this holiday is celebrated on the second Saturday of September, but now the idea of celebrating it on May 22, on the Day of Summer Saint Nicholas, is being discussed.

Renaming of streets and towns in the Mykolayiv region

As you know, in April the Mykolaiv City Council adopted a new regulation regarding the renaming of toponyms — the authorities plan to get rid of all Russian names in the city.

Also, the deputy commission on legality approved a new version of the regulation on the activities of the commission on toponymy, which was engaged in street renaming.

In particular, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych reported that there was a commission on toponymy in the city, which was engaged in renaming streets, but as of today, its composition needs to be updated.

However, in August it became known that the toponymic commission has not yet started working. Due to the withdrawal of one of the candidates, the deputies of the city council will have to update the composition of the commission.

We will also remind you that Major General Dmytro Marchenko, who led the defense of Mykolaiv at the beginning of the full-scale war, opposed the renaming of one of the city's streets after him.

Previously, according to the interim results of a survey within the project «Decolonization: rethinking the imperial past in the public space of Mykolaiv», the name of Dmytro Marchenko became one of those in whose honor Mykolaiv residents propose to rename the streets of the city. The offer was submitted by 32 respondents.

In September, deputies of the Mykolaiv City Council approved the new composition of the toponymic commission. Major General Dmytro Marchenko was included in it, but with the note «by agreement».

As you know, the Mykolaiv Oblast recommends revising the names of the cities of Pervomaisk, Yuzhnoukrainian and 57 villages due to non-compliance with the standards of the state language.

After that, public discussions about renaming the city started in Pervomaisk. The townspeople were asked to choose a name from five proposed options: Olviopol, Bohopol and Holta, Olvia or Pershotravensk.

Only on December 30, the deputies decided to propose to the Verkhovna Rada at once two options for the name of the city: Olviopol, or to keep the same name Pervomaisk. Olviopol was the leader in local polls.

The city of Yuzhnoukrainsk has not yet decided on the proposals. The deputies want to propose two names to the Verkhovna Rada at once: Pivdennoukrainsk and Hard. At the meeting of the last session, they did not have enough votes.

In mid-December 2023 , the final list of options for new street names to be renamed was formed in the Snihurivka community after public discussions. The second stage of electronic voting has begun.

As part of the law on decolonization, 42 streets in the Snihurivka community will be renamed.
