The work is funded by the Danish government through the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO).
This is described in the article NikVesti «Build back better». What does the principle of «build back better than it was» actually mean for Mykolaiv?».
This project generally involves replacing and rehabilitating pipes, installing meters and modern equipment that will allow the water utility «to immediately see if there are leaks from pipes» and respond quickly.
Currently, water losses from the network in the Korabelnyi district are «more than 50%», Jakob Hansen, Head of the Danish Embassy's office in Mykolaiv, explained to us in a comment.
«Either this water is just leaking out, or it is what is called commercial losses — something that is not accounted for. But all of this can be reduced by putting meters in the right places to account for all this water that is lost,» he explained.
The project is scheduled to start in 2026. The tender process, signing of the contract, and selection of the contractor are currently being finalised.
«Physically, it should start next year, but the process of tender, signing the contract, and selecting the contractor is being completed,» added Jacob Hansen.
Mykolaiv needs clean water
Although the launch of the new water supply system for Mykolaiv took place in October 2025, this does not guarantee that the city will immediately receive drinking water, as a new water treatment system needs to be built, Kristina Mikulova, Head of the European Investment Bank's Eastern Europe Regional Centre, told NikVesti.
At the same time, Deputy Mayor of Mykolaiv and head of the city's recovery working group Serhii Korenev said that the Mykolaiv Recovery Agency is working to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant and launch it simultaneously with the new water supply system. And Vitalii Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Water Authority, said he did not want to rush to take out a large loan for the construction of water treatment facilities for Mykolaiv, despite the EIB's readiness to allocate more than €100 million.
Later, it became known that the State Agency for the Restoration and Development of Infrastructure is currently upgrading the water treatment system for Mykolaiv on behalf of the government.
Together with the constructed water pipeline, this will allow the city to launch a centralised drinking water supply in August 2025, said Serhii Sukhomlyn, head of the State Agency for Infrastructure Recovery and Development.
