The city of Mykolaiv plans to build a municipal Aquatic Palace and a School for Young Sailors, designed by the Italian architectural company One Works. This will require 164.5 million hryvnias.
The city authorities are currently looking for a donor to finance these works. To do this, the project was published on the website of the state DREAM system, according to NikVesti.
«Today, we do not have this facility in our budget. It is, you know, like our dream. That's why we are looking for something from our donors here (in the DREAM system). If we get something, we will continue to work,» Oleksii Savchuk, Director of the Capital Construction Department of the City Council, which initiated the project, explained in a comment to NikVesti.
The complex of buildings is supposed to be located on the left bank of the Inhul River, on the lower embankment near the pedestrian bridge.
«The Water Palace aims to become a new hub that will contribute to the development of the economy and the image of Mykolaiv as a «city on the wave of», the project description says.
In general, it is planned that the complex will consist of two buildings:
- The west will house the Water Palace building. It will house educational spaces, a multipurpose event hall, office space for the «Mykolaiv Maritime Assembly», as well as an information point and ticketing for water activities and transport.
- In the east, there is the School of Young Seafarers, which will have classrooms for 160 students.
There is also a plan to build a suspended terrace on the territory that will connect the two buildings with a pedestrian bridge on the Ingul River to the east. The total area of the new above-ground complex is 2,350 square metres.
In December 2018, during his visit to Mykolaiv, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he would like to see a new European-level sports palace built in the city. This idea was supported by the mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych.
In March 2018, in an interview with NikVesti, the only champion of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics in the history of independent Ukraine, Oleksandr Abramenko, a resident of Mykolaiv, said that he was forced to leave for Belarus to prepare for the upcoming competition.
In turn, in January 2017, Olympic sabre fencing champion Olha Harlan, a Mykolaiv-based fencer, also noted that Mykolaiv needs a good swimming pool where athletes can train.
Also, during his visit to Mykolaiv in July 2019, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he would fulfil his promise to build a sports palace in Mykolaiv.
