The Ministry of Education announced the name of the new unified university in Mykolaiv

The Vasyl Sukhomlynskyi National University and the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding will be merged in Mykolaiv. Instead of two higher education institutions, a new educational institution of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences will be created.

The relevant institution was supported by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on January 5, the Ministry of Education reported on its official website.

«Later, these two institutions will form the multi-disciplinary University of Shipbuilding and Development of the South (UKRoP). In the new institution, an autonomous pedagogical institute will develop, which will strengthen the pedagogical direction in the region,» the message reads.

The ministry notes that in the newly established higher education institution, students will be able to expand their choice of disciplines. Also, such a reorganization will improve working conditions for employees of higher education institutions. So, as early as 2024, it is planned to invest funds in new scientific and educational and laboratory equipment for the educational institution.

«Decisions on the reorganization of higher education institutions are necessary in order to improve the quality of higher education and the objective need to modernize institutions. This year, we plan to direct funding from the World Bank, in particular, to the development of higher education institutions. In 2023, a successful unification of institutions with subsequent significant investment was carried out in Dnipro, where the Ukrainian State University of Science and Technology was established,» the ministry noted.

We will remind you that earlier the head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Vitalii Kim, expressed the opinion that one of the universities that suffered from Russian shelling should be closed or reorganized and attached to a more effective one.

At that time, Mykolaiv Sukhomlynskyi University reacted to the statement of the head of Mykolaiv RMA. Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences Professor Svitlana Yakymenko expressed the opinion that the educational institution should not be closed. University students also joined the appeal, calling to save the educational institution and start work on the demolition of the rubble of the destroyed part of the university.
