On July 17, separate provisions of Article 40 of the Law of Ukraine «On Media» will enter into force, which will increase the presence of the state language on television.

This was announced by Taras Kremin, the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language.

«From July 17, 2024, the requirements regarding the use of the state language in the broadcasts of Ukrainian-language programs will be strengthened: the use of a non-state language in the broadcasts will be allowed only in fixed expressions, short phrases or individual words used by the participants of the program, which is broadcast live, except for the presenters (announcers) of the program, if the total duration of such replicas does not exceed 10% of the duration of the program. All speeches, interviews, comments, explanations, questions, individual remarks, etc. in a non-state language must be translated, dubbed or voiced in Ukrainian,» the message reads.

As Taras Kremin pointed out, this will contribute to the termination of the Ukrainian-Russian bilingual regime in television and radio broadcasts, which, according to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, does not correspond to the constitutional status of Ukrainian as the only state language and is a violation of the right of citizens to receive information and services in the state language.

«The new requirements for increasing the presence of the Ukrainian language on television are an important step to strengthen the status of the state language in the information space. From now on, viewers will have the opportunity to consume even more content in their native Ukrainian language,» Taras Kremin emphasized.

We will remind, the head of Mykolaiv RMA Vitalii Kim believes that during the war, work rules should be introduced for the media and journalists, which will control them.
