The US proposes to end the war in Ukraine by the beginning of summer and insists on a clear schedule for negotiations.

This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a conversation with journalists, LB reports.

According to him, the American side is determined to do everything possible to end the war by June and is not currently showing any signs of withdrawing from the negotiation process.

And we understand that they will devote all their time to internal processes — elections, changes in the mood of their society. Elections are definitely more important to them. Let's not be naive. They say they want to get everything done by June. And they will do everything to end the war. They want a clear schedule of all events. In principle, we have long proposed to the American side to have a really clear Sequence Plan. So that everyone understands what the parties are going for, at what point, at what stages. So that the war does not drag on, because we really want to end the war and guarantee security. That's all. If the Russians are really ready to end the war, then it is really important to fix the terms,» the president said.

Speaking about the negotiations between Ukraine, the US and Russia in Abu Dhabi, Zelenskyy said that the Ukrainian side had once again confirmed its position on Donbas. He called the principle of «staying where we are» the most realistic option for a ceasefire. At the same time, the Americans raised the idea of a free economic zone, but neither Ukraine nor Russia find it attractive.

«I would like to remind you that, in general, neither Ukraine nor Russia has ever been enthusiastic about the idea of a free economic zone. Russia wants us to leave Donetsk, and we said that the most reliable position is 'stay where we are'. The American side is proposing what they see as a compromise option. And we note that the parties have discussed this issue. In connection with the possible risks, the Ukrainian delegation communicated the position of the President of Ukraine that if there are any bilateral agreements between Russia and the United States, the points related to Ukraine cannot contradict the Constitution of Ukraine or the laws of Ukraine, and should not be discussed without Ukraine. Ukraine will demonstrate its reaction to this in the event of such risks,» Volodymyr Zelenskyy added.

Also, according to Zelenskyy, there is currently no common vision for the management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. All parties understand that this issue is related to security, infrastructure restoration, water resources, and the region's ecosystem.

«All parties realise that the issue of the plant must be resolved together with the issues of dam restoration, water use and the overall ecosystem of this territory. The Americans are proposing that the parties end the war before the beginning of this summer and are likely to put pressure on the parties to adhere to this schedule. Why this summer? We understand that their internal issues in America have an impact and will certainly become even more relevant for them, the president said.

He noted separately that for the first time, the possibility of bringing the most difficult issues to a trilateral meeting of leaders was discussed during the negotiations. However, this requires serious preparation, but he called the very fact of discussing such a format important.

"But this requires some preparatory elements. It is important that discussions of this format are present in the dialogue,» said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
