Europe calls for trilateral summit with Ukraine after Trump-Putin meeting

European leaders issued a statement after the meeting between Trump and Putin. Photo: HANDOUT | AFP / SCANPIXFollowing Donald Trump's talks with Vladimir Putin, European leaders issued a joint statement and proposed organising a trilateral summit with Ukraine.
The statement was made by European leaders, according to RBC-Ukraine.
The document, signed by French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, reads: Europe is ready to become an active participant in the negotiations.
In the morning, Trump briefed European leaders and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the results of his meeting with Putin.
He said: «There is no deal until there is a deal» and stressed that the next stage is negotiations with Zelenskyy, which will take place in the near future.
European leaders welcomed Trump's words about the US readiness to provide Ukraine with security guarantees and said that the «Coalition of the Resolute» is ready to support this process. They emphasised that Russia has no right to block Ukraine's movement towards the EU and NATO, and that Ukrainians should determine their own territory and future.
Europe also promised to increase assistance to Ukraine and pressure on Russia through sanctions.
As a reminder, the US and Russian presidents did not reach an agreement on a ceasefire in Ukraine during their meeting in Alaska on 15 August, but, according to Donald Trump, progress can be made in this direction. It is possible that another summit could be held soon and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could join it.
