US Special Representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, has proposed the creation of a demilitarised zone between Ukraine and Russia as a potential step towards resolving the conflict.
He said this on Fox News.
According to Kellogg, the key element could be a 30-day ceasefire with the parties holding their current positions. He stressed that this would allow each side to maintain control over the territories currently under their influence.
Kellogg noted that such agreements are not necessarily final, as political circumstances can change over time. He cited the history of the Baltic states and the reunification of Germany after World War II as examples.
He also said that Ukraine is allegedly ready to consider the creation of a temporary demilitarised zone. The idea is to withdraw troops from both sides by 15 kilometres, which would form a 30-kilometre buffer zone. It should be controlled by the military of the international coalition, which Keith Kellogg called «a coalition of the resolute».
He expressed his belief that if the ceasefire can be maintained for at least a month, it can be extended. He added that from a military point of view, it would be extremely difficult to resume large-scale combat operations after such a period of cessation of hostilities.
As a reminder, the Kremlin has stated that a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is necessary. However, there are no specifics about it yet.
It is worth noting that EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius said that the European Union could significantly increase its support for Ukraine by purchasing weapons directly from domestic producers.
According to him, if Trump fails to convince Putin to make peace, the EU could put forward more convincing arguments in favour of peace very quickly.
Earlier, it was also reported that Vladimir Putin ref used US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff's proposal for a ceasefire on the front line.
