Russian presidential spokesman Dmitrii Peskov has said that reports from the United States that Ukraine's accession to NATO has been ruled out are in line with Russia's position.

According to him, the Kremlin views this positively, the Russian news agency «Interfax» reported.

Dmitrii Peskov noted that such statements have been made by Washington at various levels and confirm Russia's view that Ukraine should not become part of the North Atlantic Alliance. He reiterated the Russian thesis about the threat to «Russia's national interests» if Ukraine joined NATO, and called the desire for the Alliance one of the reasons for the full-scale invasion.

Regarding media reports that the United States might recognise Russia's control over Crimea as part of a future peace agreement, Dmitrii Peskov refrained from commenting. He said that the process of finding a peaceful settlement should remain non-public and called for a cautious attitude to media information.

«There are a lot of such reports and discussions now. Of course, the work on finding ways to find a peaceful settlement cannot and should not take place in the public sphere. It should take place in a completely discrete mode, and therefore we need to be very, very careful about such impersonal information injections, he said.

It should be noted that the Russians claim to have made «some progress» in negotiations to resolve the war against Ukraine, but admit that the process is «quite difficult».
