The United States has expressed a desire for Ukraine to hold presidential and parliamentary elections, possibly by the end of this year, if Kyiv reaches a ceasefire with Russia.

This was stated in an interview with Reuters by Keith Kellogg, President Donald Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia.

Kellogg noted that elections are an important element for maintaining democracy, even in times of war, and pointed out that many democratic countries hold elections during hostilities.

«Most democratic countries hold elections during wartime. I think it is important for them. I think it's good for democracy. That's the beauty of a strong democracy - you have more than one person who can run,» he said.

Trump's team is working on a plan for peace talks that could lead to an end to the war in the first months of the new presidency. However, no details of this strategy have been disclosed and it is not known when a concrete plan might be presented.

According to Kellogg, the elections could be part of a ceasefire agreement that would allow Ukraine and Russia to begin negotiations on a long-term peace.

«It is unclear how such a proposal would be received in Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine can hold elections this year if the fighting stops and strong security guarantees are provided to prevent renewed hostilities with Russia,» the publication writes.

As a reminder, in November 2024, Donald Trump's special envoy for the war in Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, presented a new plan for a peaceful settlement of the conflict, which proposes freezing the front line, creating a demilitarised zone and postponing Ukraine's accession to NATO indefinitely.

As early as January 2025, President Donald Trump instructed retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg to end the war in Ukraine in one hundred days. Almost no one believes that he will be able to do so.
