«Mykolaivvodokanal» has stated that the city’s sewerage networks are in a worse condition than the water supply networks

Mykolaiv’s sewerage networks are in a critical state, and sewer collapses occur in the city virtually every week.

This was reported during a briefing by Hennadii Iziumov, director of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaivvodokanal», according to NikVesti.

He noted that the total length of the city’s water supply networks is almost 1,260 kilometres, whilst the sewerage networks stretch for around 760 kilometres.

«Their condition is critical. As I see it, the state of the water networks is less critical than that of the sewerage networks. We have sewer collapses every week; you can see that. This is a major problem,» said Hennadii Iziumov.

He noted that international donors mainly fund projects to restore water supply infrastructure, whilst there is a lack of funds for the reconstruction of sewerage networks. The director of the municipal enterprise noted that he had already prepared a list of the most problematic sites for discussion with international partners.

«We will have a cluster of donors working in Ukraine; we have prepared our most critical issues. This mainly concerns the reconstruction of sewerage networks and pumping stations,» he noted.

Hennadii Iziumov also explained that the company operates a pipeline rehabilitation workshop, established with Danish support. According to him, there is no equivalent to this equipment in Ukraine.

«We have a really impressive rehabilitation workshop, the likes of which cannot be found in any other city in Ukraine. It was rebuilt with funding from Denmark,» said the head of the water utility.

Last year, the workshop rehabilitated 160 metres of pipelines. The company now plans to increase the volume of work and restore sections of sewerage collectors on a monthly basis. In particular, preparatory work has already been carried out on the collector on Metalurhiv Street in the Korabelnyi district, where around 600 metres of networks were inspected.

Separately, the water utility plans to begin repairs on the emergency sewer near the «Strasse» market on Namyv, a problem that has remained unresolved for two years.

«There is a very large amount of work to be done there; we need to replace a 1,000-millimetre-diameter collector, 160 metres in length,» explained Hennadii Iziumov.

At the same time, the city continues to upgrade its water supply networks. According to the company, 10 kilometres of pipes were replaced in Mykolaiv in 2025, and over two kilometres more in the first quarter of 2026.

It should be recalled that the former head of the municipal enterprise «Mykolaivvodokanal», Borys Dudenko, had previously spoken about the problem of the poor condition of the section of the sewerage collector beneath the «Strasse» market in the Namyv neighbourhood. He noted that the market stalls are located directly above a concrete sewer, which has suffered significant gas corrosion and is in a state of disrepair.
