The relevant draft decision has been submitted to the executive committee of Mykolaiv City Council for consideration.
The document provides for the approval of regulations governing the campaign and sets out the mechanism for residents, businesses and organisations to participate in planting trees in the city. The initiative will be implemented on a charitable basis.
According to the draft, the campaign will be coordinated by the Department of Housing and Communal Services of the Mykolaiv City Council, whilst technical support will be provided by the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks». The campaign aims to involve residents in greening the city and fostering an environmental culture.
Both individuals and enterprises, institutions, community organisations and businesses will be able to take part in the project. To do so, they will need to submit an online application, agree their participation with the organisers and purchase planting stock and related materials for the planting.
The planting, transport and subsequent care of the trees will be provided by the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks». Participants will be able to be present during the planting and, if they wish, receive an information plaque indicating who funded the tree.
The project separately specifies a list of planting locations and recommended species of trees and shrubs. The exact planting sites at the locations will be determined by the municipal enterprise, taking into account the condition of the areas and utility networks.
Once the decision has been approved by the executive committee, the campaign will run as a pilot project until the end of 2026. Based on its results, plans are in place to determine the future format for implementing the initiative.
Separately, the draft decision sets out requirements for planting stock that may be used when planting trees as part of the scheme.
In particular, deciduous tree seedlings must have a trunk circumference of at least 10 centimetres at a height of 1.3 metres and be at least 4 years old. They must be straight-trunked, undamaged and have a well-developed root system.
Separate requirements apply to coniferous species:the seedling must be at least 1.2 metres tall, with a crown diameter of no less than 70 centimetres; it must have at least five whorls, as well as a single leader shoot and healthy needles.
It is also stipulated that seedlings must be supplied in containers with a capacity of at least 40 litres or with a high-quality root ball of the appropriate size. Planting material must be free from pests and diseases, have a well-moistened root system and be labelled with the tree species.
The draft also includes a list of locations where trees are to be planted, as well as recommended species and the number of trees for each green area.
List of green space development sites for planting tree seedlings and requirements regarding the types and number of green plantingsIt should be noted that an inventory of trees and shrubs in the city’s squares and parks is currently underway in Mykolaiv. As of May, specialists from the municipal enterprise «Mykolaiv Parks» had surveyed 21 green areas.
It was also reported that Mykolaiv Parks had removed trees along Soborna Street. The green spaces had been previously inspected by a special commission and approved for removal.
However, the municipal enterprise does not plan to plant new trees to replace the dangerous and dead ones that have been removed.
