President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the Russian army has launched a counteroffensive in the Kharkiv direction.

This was stated by the head of state during a joint press conference with the President of Slovakia Zuzana Chaputova in Kyiv, OBOZ.UA writes.

According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian combat brigades and artillery fire met the occupiers on the Kharkiv direction.

«Russia has started a new wave of counter-attacks in this direction. Ukraine met them there with our troops, brigades and artillery,» he said.

The president added that the military command was aware of the enemy's plans for a new offensive and calculated the forces to respond to the attack.

«It is important that they can increase and raise more forces in this direction, this is a fact. But our military, the military command calculated the forces in order to meet the enemy with fire,» Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

At the moment, a battle is ongoing in the Kharkiv direction.

«From what I know, at eight in the morning they stopped (the Russian offensive, — note) with artillery fire,» said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

It will be recalled that earlier the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said that the Russian army was tasked with capturing Chasiv Yar by May 9.
